Butternut Squash at the Supermarket
3 de August de 2021

The origin of butternut squash—one of the oldest known vegetables—is much debated. We must go back around 10,000 years to Mesoamerica, where it is believed the first squash plant was cultivated. However, some historians place its origins in North America, Babylon, Egypt, or China.
Well, of course—it was Columbus who brought it back after his expedition to the Americas in 1492.
And it wasn’t just used in cooking. From the 12th century onwards, pilgrims began using squash as a natural water bottle. It was even turned into musical instruments like guitars or rattles, showcasing its incredible versatility.
In recent years, however, it’s Halloween that has made it internationally famous. The so-called Jack-o’-lantern has become one of the most iconic symbols of the celebration.
In the Iberian Peninsula, we also decorate with squash—or, as the saying goes, “give someone the squash” (meaning a rejection in Spanish!). But above all, we love growing and cooking with it, because it’s a wonderfully versatile, delicious, and healthy vegetable. And what’s more, it’s a sustainable crop that’s highly respectful of the environment.
All good things stand the test of time…
